April 11, 2016
Anyone who talks about roofing in Wylie, TX eventually gets to the same evening. On April 11, 2016, a storm dropped hail that FOX 4 described as baseball-sized across the city. The National Weather Service says about 80% of Wylie's homes were affected and damage passed $300 million.
CBS Texas quoted Mayor Eric Hogue estimating that roughly 12,000 homes were damaged. Hail went through roofs and soaked the rooms below. Blue tarps covered house after house. The city closed its Public Safety Building because of hail damage, and Wylie ISD called off classes the next day. CoreLogic later put losses from the Wylie storm at $246.8 million.
Recovery was slow. NBC 5 found a Wylie homeowner still waiting on repairs nearly nine months after the storm.

Leave the roof to the roofer. A wet or storm-hit roof is slippery, and damaged decking can give way, so keep off it and keep the ladder put away. Stay clear of any downed power line and report it to Oncor (or Farmers Electric Cooperative where it serves your street), or call 911. Inside, pull furniture and electronics away from the drip, set out a bucket or towels, and keep everyone out of a room where the ceiling is sagging. Take photos from the yard and from inside, then call your insurance company and a roofer.
What the storm taught about Wylie roofs
Decking can be punctured
Roofing investigators who studied the damage told NBC 5 that stones the size of baseballs or larger went through the wood decking on many Wylie roofs, not just the shingles.
Overlays did worse
The same team said that overlays, a new layer of shingles nailed over the old one to save the tear-off cost, weaken the new layer's resistance to hail, and that new shingles do best on a solid deck.
Rush jobs age fast
With thousands of roofs to replace at once, work stretched across months. A roof installed in that crunch deserves a closer look at its flashing, vents and nailing.
Ten years on: where Wylie roofs stand
- 2016 onward. Damaged homes were re-roofed over the following months and years, many through insurance claims.
- Since then. Each spring adds its own hail and wind. Small bruises do not always leak right away.
- 2026. Those post-storm roofs are about ten years old. Asphalt shingles in North Texas heat often show wear well before the number on the package, so this is a sensible point to have one inspected.
- Before the next storm. Know your roof's age, whether it was a full tear-off, and what your policy says about wind and hail deductibles. Having those answers ready makes the next claim simpler.

Between two lakes, and growing
Wylie sits about 5 miles south of Lavon Lake, between it and Lake Ray Hubbard, and the city spreads across Collin, Dallas and Rockwall counties. Lavon Dam and the choice of Wylie for the North Texas Municipal Water District's offices helped the town grow by 1960, but the big wave came later. The census counted 15,132 residents in 2000, 41,427 in 2010 and 57,526 in 2020.
So most Wylie houses were built in the 2000s, and many were already on their second roof within ten years because of the 2016 hail. The older blocks near downtown have their own history: a tornado struck downtown on Mother's Day 1993, and the district was later renovated around its surviving century-old buildings.

Wylie permits and the roofer's paperwork
- Permit required. The City of Wylie lists roofing replacement, residential and commercial, among projects that need a building permit.
- Turnaround. The city puts residential permit review at 5 to 10 business days, so a roofer should file before it schedules your tear-off.
- Where to ask. Building Inspection takes registration and permit questions at permits@wylietexas.gov and 972-516-6100, option 3. Ask there whether the roofer you are considering has filed with the city.
- No state license. Texas does not license roofers, so the city's records and your own checks are what you have.
Questions to ask a Wylie roofer
- Will you tear my roof down to the deck, and can you tell whether the last roof was an overlay?
- If you find hail punctures or soft spots in the decking, how will you document and price them?
- Will you file the Wylie permit before scheduling, and who requests the inspection?
- Would an impact-rated shingle make sense here, and what would it change on my insurance? (Ask your agent too.)
- Have your liability insurer send me the certificate directly.

Your deductible is yours to pay. The Texas Department of Insurance warns that a contractor may not waive your deductible, rebate it, or pad the estimate to cover it, and that a contract of $1,000 or more paid with insurance money must include a notice that you owe the deductible. Your insurer may ask for proof you paid it. A contractor also may not act as a public adjuster on a property it works on or may work on. If a roofer offers to "take care of" the deductible, hire someone else.
No state license for roofers. Texas does not license roofing contractors. A 2025 bill that would have had the state license re-roofers (HB 3344) cleared a House committee but never got a floor vote, and it died when the session ended. That puts the checking on you: ask for a certificate of liability insurance sent to you by the roofer's insurance agent or insurer, a written contract that lists the full scope, the permit or contractor registration your city requires, addresses of nearby jobs, and proof the shingle warranty was registered. The line does none of this checking for you. How to check a roofer in Texas.
A roof from the 2016 rebuild, a fresh hail hit, or a stain spreading on the ceiling? Call and tell the assistant. A Wylie roofing company sees the roof in person and gives you its own written estimate. Ask whether there is a charge to inspect.
How a Wylie call is passed along
- Dial the lineAn automated assistant picks up (469) 649-7066 any time and asks what you need. The same number also takes air conditioning, heating and pressure washing calls, so say "roof".
- Tell it about the roofHail, a drip in the ceiling, shingles in the yard, a tree limb, or an aging roof you want checked, plus your town and how soon you need someone.
- Get transferredThe call goes to an independent roofing company that is locally owned and works in Dallas-Fort Worth. It hears a quick summary of your call before it answers.
- Work with that companyIt inspects, prices and does the job, and you pay it (or your insurer does, as you arrange). If it cannot pick up, it gets your name, number, town and need so it can call you back.
