A young city with an old name
Roofing in Murphy, TX starts with a city that is much newer than its history. Settlers arrived in 1846 under the Peters Colony grants, and the town took William Murphy's name when the railroad came through in 1888. It incorporated in 1958. Then the suburbs reached it.
Census counts show Murphy with about 3,100 people in 2000 and about 21,000 by 2020, so most of its homes are recent. The President George Bush Turnpike opened in 2000 and made the city an easy commute to Plano and Richardson.
The result is a town where a large share of the roofs went on within a short span of years. Many of those first roofs are now old enough to be in the range, which is the window when North Texas homeowners start pricing replacements, especially after a few hail seasons.

What Murphy's re-roof rules say
From the City of Murphy's re-roofing permit requirements. Confirm the current version with the city before work starts.
| Rule | What it means for your roof |
|---|---|
| Remove the existing covering first | No layering a new roof over the old one. Expect a full tear-off. |
| Minimum Class C covering | The roof covering must carry at least a Class C fire rating. |
| Approved materials | Composition shingles (30-year), standing seam metal, terra-cotta tile, concrete tile or slate. |
| Muted colors | Bright or unusual roof colors may not pass. Check with your HOA as well. |
| Prohibited | Wood shingle, shake and metal roofing systems of the kind associated with agricultural or industrial buildings, and natural (galvanized or aluminum) metal roofs. |
| Permit fee | Set by Murphy's Code of Ordinances, Article A9.000. |
Registration, permits and inspections
- Every contractor registers. Murphy's building permit application says all contractors and subcontractors must be registered with the city. Permits are not issued until they are.
- What registration has asked for. The city's builder packet says photo ID, proof of liability insurance and any required state licenses are presented in person, and registration lasts 12 months. Texas does not license roofers, so for a roofing company the insurance proof is the part to ask about.
- Permit on site. The permit must be posted at the job for inspection.
- Inspection timing. Requests made by 2 p.m. are reviewed for scheduling the next business day, and inspectors do not inspect while work is still going on.
City Hall is at 206 N. Murphy Road (972-468-4000). The inspection line is 972-468-4050.

Murphy sits between Plano and Wylie, two of the cities hit hardest by hail in spring 2016. During that stretch of storms, WFAA reported that homeowners in Murphy and Wylie could wait weeks for roof work to get done. When a storm passes over, keep people off the roof and away from fallen lines.
Leave the roof to the roofer. A wet or storm-hit roof is slippery, and damaged decking can give way, so keep off it and keep the ladder put away. Stay clear of any downed power line and report it to Oncor or your local electric utility, or call 911. Inside, pull furniture and electronics away from the drip, set out a bucket or towels, and keep everyone out of a room where the ceiling is sagging. Take photos from the yard and from inside, then call your insurance company and a roofer.
Before you hire in Murphy, ask
- Does Murphy have your registration on file this year, and your subcontractors' as well?
- Does your estimate show a full tear-off, as the city requires?
- Is the shingle or metal you are proposing on Murphy's approved list, in a color my HOA will accept?
- Who requests the inspections, and will I get the permit number?
- Will your liability insurer send the certificate straight to me?
No state license for roofers. Texas does not license roofing contractors. A 2025 bill that would have had the state license re-roofers (HB 3344) cleared a House committee but never got a floor vote, and it died when the session ended. That puts the checking on you: ask for a certificate of liability insurance sent to you by the roofer's insurance agent or insurer, a written contract that lists the full scope, the permit or contractor registration your city requires, addresses of nearby jobs, and proof the shingle warranty was registered. The line does none of this checking for you. How to check a roofer in Texas.
Hail marks on the gutters, a twenty-year-old roof, or an HOA letter about worn shingles? Call and say what you see. The Murphy roofing company you reach comes out, looks, and writes its own estimate. Many roofers inspect at no charge; ask.
