The Unique Dining Capital, and its roofs
Roofing in Roanoke, TX serves a small city with a big name. In 2009 the Texas Legislature named Roanoke the Unique Dining Capital of Texas, and its restaurants cluster along Oak Street downtown.
Roanoke had 9,665 residents in the 2020 census and an estimated 10,798 by mid-2023. Most of the city lies in Denton County, with a small piece in Tarrant County. Newer subdivisions have filled in much of the land around the old town. Fairway Ranch, for example, was built on part of the ranch that once belonged to golfer Byron Nelson, and listings there show homes built from about 2013 to 2019.
DFW Expert Roofers is a free phone line, not a roofing contractor. A call connects you with an independent, locally owned roofing company that takes Roanoke calls, and that company does all the roof work.
Roof repair in Roanoke: what the city says
Many Roanoke searches are about repair, not a whole new roof. The city's rule covers both.
- Repairs count. Roanoke's Building Inspection page says a permit is required before alterations, additions, new construction or repairs to existing buildings and structures.
- The codes are current. The city has adopted the 2021 International Codes, including the residential code, by Ordinance 2023-122.
- Contractors register. The city's commercial permit packet says the general contractor must be registered with Roanoke before a permit is issued, at no fee. Ask whether that applies to your home job.
- Who to call. City Hall is at 500 S. Oak Street. The inspection line is 817-491-2411, staffed Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to noon.
Because the page does not single out roofing, the honest answer to "do I need a permit for this?" is to ask the city with your address and the scope of work, and to have the roofer confirm what it filed.
Two Roanoke roofs, two conversations
A 2010s house in Fairway Ranch
A roof from 2013 to 2019 is probably still on its first set of shingles. Repairs after hail or wind are the likely call, and the original shingle warranty may still apply. Find your closing papers before the roofer visits.
An older Roanoke house
Older homes may have been re-roofed more than once. Ask the roofer to count the existing layers of roofing, what the decking looks like once the old shingles are off, and how the roofer prices extra work it finds.
Two hail days in 2024
Storm report listings show hail of about 2 inches about a mile from Roanoke on Memorial Day evening 2024, with 1.5 inch stones a few miles out. Earlier that spring, on March 14, 2024, a USA Today Network storm report citing the National Weather Service listed Roanoke among the places where hail of about 1.5 to 3 inches fell, and NBC DFW readers sent photos of hail near US 377 and State Highway 114. Hail that size can bruise shingles and crack vent caps, and the damage is often invisible from the yard. Photograph what you can from the ground, note the date, and call your insurer before any repair work starts.
Leave the roof to the roofer. A wet or storm-hit roof is slippery, and damaged decking can give way, so keep off it and keep the ladder put away. Stay clear of any downed power line and report it to Oncor or your local electric utility, or call 911. Inside, pull furniture and electronics away from the drip, set out a bucket or towels, and keep everyone out of a room where the ceiling is sagging. Take photos from the yard and from inside, then call your insurance company and a roofer.

Questions to ask a Roanoke roofer
- Does this repair need a Roanoke permit, and will you apply for it?
- Are you registered with the City of Roanoke?
- Is my original shingle warranty still active, and will a repair affect it?
- How many roof layers are on the house now?
- Can your insurance company send me a certificate of liability coverage?
Your deductible is yours to pay. The Texas Department of Insurance warns that a contractor may not waive your deductible, rebate it, or pad the estimate to cover it, and that a contract of $1,000 or more paid with insurance money must include a notice that you owe the deductible. Your insurer may ask for proof you paid it. A contractor also may not act as a public adjuster on a property it works on or may work on. If a roofer offers to "take care of" the deductible, hire someone else.
How a Roanoke call is handled
- Dial the lineAn automated assistant picks up (469) 649-7066 any time and asks what you need. The same number also takes air conditioning, heating and pressure washing calls, so say "roof".
- Tell it about the roofHail, a drip in the ceiling, shingles in the yard, a tree limb, or an aging roof you want checked, plus your town and how soon you need someone.
- Get transferredThe call goes to an independent roofing company that is locally owned and works in Dallas-Fort Worth. It hears a quick summary of your call before it answers.
- Work with that companyIt inspects, prices and does the job, and you pay it (or your insurer does, as you arrange). If it cannot pick up, it gets your name, number, town and need so it can call you back.
A few missing shingles, a drip near the chimney or hail on a newer roof in Roanoke? Call and describe it. A roofing company that serves the city sees it in person and quotes its own price.
