The county seat since 1848
Roofing in Kaufman, TX means working in a small town with a long history. Kaufman has been the seat of Kaufman County since the county was created in 1848, named for David S. Kaufman, who served in the congress of the Republic of Texas and later in the U.S. Congress.
The 2020 census counted 6,797 people in the city, a fraction of the county's 145,310. Forney, to the north, is now the county's largest city. Downtown, the county built a modernist courthouse in 1956 to replace its 1887 building; that 1956 courthouse closed in 2023.
Calls from a county seat like this can involve anything from an older frame house in town to a home on acreage with a barn or a metal-roofed shop. The roofer you reach should be ready to quote whichever you have.

Kaufman permit steps for a roof
The City of Kaufman's Building Safety Division, part of Development Services, sets two rules a roof job runs into: the roofer registers, and a roof replacement gets a permit.
- Registration first. All contractors, roofers included, must be registered with the city before applying for a permit. It is done online through MyGov, and the city charges no registration fee.
- Roof replacement needs a permit. The city's permit brochure names replacement of roofs among the major repairs that require one.
- Who and where. The residential checklist asks for the contractor's name and phone number and the owner's details.
- Your property ID. It also asks for the Kaufman County Appraisal District property ID. Find yours on your appraisal notice or the district's website and have it ready for the roofer.
- The value of the job. The application asks for an estimated project value, which is one more reason to have a written estimate before work starts.
Forms and fees change, so confirm current requirements with the city's Development Services before the job begins.

Storms and safety in and around Kaufman
The town has not had a well-documented tornado disaster of the kind that hit nearby Garland or Forney, at least in the records checked for this page. That does not mean its roofs have an easy life. Kaufman County gets the same spring hail, high wind and long summers as the rest of North Texas.
The nearest notable event came on April 3, 2012, when a tornado touched down near Forney, the county's largest city, and stayed inside Kaufman County. The National Weather Service rated it EF-3.
Power in and around Kaufman may come from Oncor or from an electric cooperative, depending on the address. Check your bill so you know who to call if a storm brings a line down.

Leave the roof to the roofer. A wet or storm-hit roof is slippery, and damaged decking can give way, so keep off it and keep the ladder put away. Stay clear of any downed power line and report it to Oncor or the electric cooperative that serves your address, or call 911. Inside, pull furniture and electronics away from the drip, set out a bucket or towels, and keep everyone out of a room where the ceiling is sagging. Take photos from the yard and from inside, then call your insurance company and a roofer.
Questions to put to a roofer in Kaufman
- Are you registered with the City of Kaufman in MyGov? It is free, so why not?
- Do you need my appraisal district property ID for the permit, and will you file it?
- For a metal roof on the house or a barn, what gauge and fastening system are you quoting?
- On an older house, how will you handle flashing at the chimney and walls?
- Who is your liability insurer, and will it send me a certificate?

Your deductible is yours to pay. The Texas Department of Insurance warns that a contractor may not waive your deductible, rebate it, or pad the estimate to cover it, and that a contract of $1,000 or more paid with insurance money must include a notice that you owe the deductible. Your insurer may ask for proof you paid it. A contractor also may not act as a public adjuster on a property it works on or may work on. If a roofer offers to "take care of" the deductible, hire someone else.
No state license for roofers. Texas does not license roofing contractors. A 2025 bill that would have had the state license re-roofers (HB 3344) cleared a House committee but never got a floor vote, and it died when the session ended. That puts the checking on you: ask for a certificate of liability insurance sent to you by the roofer's insurance agent or insurer, a written contract that lists the full scope, the permit or contractor registration your city requires, addresses of nearby jobs, and proof the shingle warranty was registered. The line does none of this checking for you. How to check a roofer in Texas.
