Small town, big hail
Roofing in Argyle, TX comes up most after hail. On March 26, 2017, a storm that lasted about five minutes left roofs across Argyle damaged badly enough that many had to be replaced outright, according to the Argyle High student newspaper, The Talon News. Car windows were smashed all over town.
Argyle is a small town about six miles southwest of Denton. It counted 4,403 residents in the 2020 census, and the Census Bureau estimated 5,859 by mid-2023, so it is growing quickly. Homes range from horse properties with pasture, stalls and arenas to newer houses in master-planned communities such as Harvest and Canyon Falls that carry Argyle addresses.
DFW Expert Roofers is a free phone line, not a contractor. Calling it connects you with an independent, locally owned roofing company that takes Argyle calls. That company looks at the roof, house and barn alike, and gives you its own price.
Argyle's contractor rule: register and show $500,000 in coverage
Most towns ask for a contractor's insurance certificate. Argyle puts a number on it.
Who must register
All contractors, before performing services within town limits. Registration is yearly. A homeowner doing work on their own home does not register but must still follow the codes.
What they file
A registration application, a valid trade license or a driver's license where there is no state trade license (the case for roofers), and a certificate of insurance with at least $500,000 in coverage.
What it costs the roofer
$125 for the first registration, then $50 for each yearly renewal, per the town's fee schedule.
Where to ask
The Permits Department at 308 Denton Street, open weekdays 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., phone 940-464-7273. Applications run through the town's iWorQ portal.
On permits, the town's rule is broad: a permit is needed before new construction, an addition, or the alteration or repair of an existing building. Its FAQ list of common permit projects does not mention roofs, so call the permits office before a re-roof and get a clear answer for your address.
Hail Argyle has seen
| When | What was reported |
|---|---|
| March 26, 2017 | A short, intense hailstorm damaged roofs, windows and cars in Argyle; many roofs needed full replacement. |
| June 11, 2023 | NBC DFW collected reader photos of very large hail from Argyle and neighboring Flower Mound that Sunday evening. |
| March 14, 2024 | Storm report listings show hail about 2.5 inches across near Argyle, nine months after the June storm. |
Hail days that close together can complicate an insurance claim, because the insurer may ask which storm caused which damage. Keep dated photos after each storm and write down the date you first noticed a problem. Then ask your insurer how it handles damage from more than one event.
Leave the roof to the roofer. A wet or storm-hit roof is slippery, and damaged decking can give way, so keep off it and keep the ladder put away. Stay clear of any downed power line and report it to Oncor or your local electric utility, or call 911. Inside, pull furniture and electronics away from the drip, set out a bucket or towels, and keep everyone out of a room where the ceiling is sagging. Take photos from the yard and from inside, then call your insurance company and a roofer.

Acreage roofs need a wider look
On a property with a barn, a shop building and a house, a hailstorm rarely hits only one roof. When you call, mention every structure you want checked so the roofing company can plan its visit. Ask whether it handles both shingle and metal roofs, how it documents damage to outbuildings, and whether your insurance policy lists those buildings at all. Some policies treat barns and other structures differently from the home, so read yours or ask your agent.
In a master-planned neighborhood the questions shift. HOA design rules can limit shingle colors and styles, so ask the HOA what is approved before signing. Under section 202.011 of the Texas Property Code, an HOA has limited power to block certain impact-resistant or energy-efficient shingles, a point worth raising with the roofer and the HOA together.

Ask an Argyle roofer
- Are you registered with the Town of Argyle this year, and can your insurer send me the certificate you filed?
- Is my property inside town limits, and what permit, if any, will you pull?
- Will you inspect the barn and outbuildings on the same visit?
- Which storm date do your photos and notes tie the damage to?
- Do you install metal as well as shingles, and how do the warranties differ?
Your deductible is yours to pay. The Texas Department of Insurance warns that a contractor may not waive your deductible, rebate it, or pad the estimate to cover it, and that a contract of $1,000 or more paid with insurance money must include a notice that you owe the deductible. Your insurer may ask for proof you paid it. A contractor also may not act as a public adjuster on a property it works on or may work on. If a roofer offers to "take care of" the deductible, hire someone else.
How calling the line works
- Dial the lineAn automated assistant picks up (469) 649-7066 any time and asks what you need. The same number also takes air conditioning, heating and pressure washing calls, so say "roof".
- Tell it about the roofHail, a drip in the ceiling, shingles in the yard, a tree limb, or an aging roof you want checked, plus your town and how soon you need someone.
- Get transferredThe call goes to an independent roofing company that is locally owned and works in Dallas-Fort Worth. It hears a quick summary of your call before it answers.
- Work with that companyIt inspects, prices and does the job, and you pay it (or your insurer does, as you arrange). If it cannot pick up, it gets your name, number, town and need so it can call you back.
Hail on the house, the barn or both? Call and say what you see. A roofing company that serves Argyle comes out, looks at each roof, then puts a written number on the job.
