Coppell's 2018 hail morning
For roofing in Coppell, TX, June 6, 2018 is the date people still mention. CBS News reported that some of the largest hail reports from that early morning storm came from Coppell and Carrollton.
NBC DFW spoke with a Coppell homeowner whose roof was only about three years old and was going to be replaced along with siding and gutters. Across the metro, the Insurance Council of Texas estimated that as many as 20,000 homes and 25,000 vehicles were damaged, with early insured losses around $425 million. A catastrophe modeler later put the total near $1 billion, mostly to roofs, windows, skylights and solar panels.

A suburb built in about twenty years
Coppell was a small farming community until DFW Airport opened next door. The census counted 3,826 residents in 1980, about 16,900 in 1990 and about 36,000 in 2000. According to the Handbook of Texas, by 2000 nearly all of the land zoned for homes had been built on. The 2020 census counted 42,983 people.
That means much of Coppell was framed within the same two decades, and many of those houses have already had at least one new roof. Coppell sits mainly in Dallas County, with a small area in the far north reaching into Denton County.
1980s homes
Built in the first wave. Find out the number of shingle layers, and whether decking has been replaced before.
1990s homes
Likely on a second roof. If that roof went on after 2018, keep its warranty paperwork where you can find it.
Newer infill
Fewer in number, since the city was nearly built out by 2000. Builder warranty terms may still apply.
Read Coppell's permit reports before you hire
Coppell publishes a monthly list of permits issued by work class. Residential reroofs show up every month, often with a short description of the work. That makes it a useful reference when you compare quotes.
- Open a recent month. Find the "Permits Issued by Work Class" report in the city's Document Center.
- Look at the reroof lines. Typical scopes read like "tear-off and replacement of existing roofing system, new underlayment, drip edge, flashing and architectural asphalt shingles."
- Compare with your quote. If your quote is missing underlayment, drip edge or flashing, ask why.
- Check the contractor. Anyone pulling a permit must be registered with the city first. Ask for the registered company name.
- Call with questions. Building Inspections: 972-304-3500.

Leave the roof to the roofer. A wet or storm-hit roof is slippery, and damaged decking can give way, so keep off it and keep the ladder put away. Stay clear of any downed power line and report it to Oncor or your local electric utility, or call 911. Inside, pull furniture and electronics away from the drip, set out a bucket or towels, and keep everyone out of a room where the ceiling is sagging. Take photos from the yard and from inside, then call your insurance company and a roofer.
Questions for a Coppell roofer
- Are you registered with the City of Coppell, and under what name?
- Will you pull a permit for my reroof, and when will I see it?
- Does your quote list underlayment, drip edge, flashing and vents by name?
- How do you price decking you replace, and will you photograph it first?
- Will your insurance agent send me a current liability certificate?
- Where is a roof you finished in Coppell that I can drive past?

Your deductible is yours to pay. The Texas Department of Insurance warns that a contractor may not waive your deductible, rebate it, or pad the estimate to cover it, and that a contract of $1,000 or more paid with insurance money must include a notice that you owe the deductible. Your insurer may ask for proof you paid it. A contractor also may not act as a public adjuster on a property it works on or may work on. If a roofer offers to "take care of" the deductible, hire someone else.
No state license for roofers. Texas does not license roofing contractors. A 2025 bill that would have had the state license re-roofers (HB 3344) cleared a House committee but never got a floor vote, and it died when the session ended. That puts the checking on you: ask for a certificate of liability insurance sent to you by the roofer's insurance agent or insurer, a written contract that lists the full scope, the permit or contractor registration your city requires, addresses of nearby jobs, and proof the shingle warranty was registered. The line does none of this checking for you. How to check a roofer in Texas.
